Description/Abstract

This study analyzed the length of stay for patients that came into the hospital for a COPD exacerbation and focused on whether there was a difference between current smokers and former smokers. Smoking has a profound impact on the quality of health for patients and the continual usage of smoking can exacerbate the effects of chronic diseases. This issue could lead to increased costs for the patient and possible mortality. The study used a retrospective chart review in a facility that was in the Western North Carolina region. A total of 60 participants were included, with 30 current smokers at time of admittance and 30 former smokers that had quit at least a month before admittance. The data was then organized using a secure Excel spreadsheet with the variables of age, sex, race, smoking status and length of hospital stay. This data was entered into the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), for analysis and interpretation.
