Description/Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of aquatic therapy on balance and quality of life in geriatric populations. Aquatic therapy has been a method of therapeutic exercise that benefits the older adult population that suffer from fear of falling. The measures used were Fall Efficacy scale and Quality of Life Assessment for Physical Activity and Health Promotion. The Fall Efficacy scale primarily measures confidence in balance while performing activities of daily living. The Quality of Life Assessment measured social, spiritual, cognitive, emotional, integrated, and activities of daily living on individual life satisfaction. A sample of 38 participants, who were 65 years or older and participated in aquatic exercise, completed the Demographic questionnaire, Fall Efficacy, and Quality of Life assessment for Physical Activity and Health Promotion. The results of the study indicate that a six-week intervention with adults 65 years or older has no effect on improving confidence in balance and quality of life. In conclusion, many articles in this study support the effects of aquatics therapy on confidence in balance and quality of life. However, this study was short-term and fails to support the claims.
